Storytelling.
Ruminating with my HYVVU colleagues over a recent project in southern Africa, there was much discussion of the region’s tourism assets - places to visit, sights to be seen, and experiences to be enjoyed. We covered topics ranging from the key attractions, transport links, and experiences at a destination.
The role of the local community in the delivery of a high-quality tourism experience.
We discussed gaps in tourism offerings and highlighted the vital role of the local community, both in delivering quality experiences and benefiting financially.
Sustainable management for land, people, and tourists, the challenge of managing such an area and such a community in a way that is sustainable to the community, to the land and to the tourist.
A visit to prehistoric rock carvings demonstrated storytelling's deep-rooted significance; social media is simply a modern tool for this universal human need.
One can see carvings of animals dating to around 6,000 years ago, made by people just like us. And the oldest carvings are not a one-off; there are carvings and drawings from across the ages. It was a vivid portrayal of our species’ need to tell and hear stories.
Memories
HYVVU’s view is that owners and operators of tourism assets each play a vital role in encouraging visitors to their regions or businesses to create enjoyable and meaningful memories. Significant experiences often resonate when there is an emotional impact, resulting from a unique combination of sensory elements-sight, sound, taste, smell, and touch-which are reinforced through reflection. Occasionally, these memories may even be embellished over time!
HYVVU believes hotels and other tourism enterprises can create memorable experiences by thoughtfully designing and delivering events and services, with professionals who genuinely value their guests.
This is what hotel management is all about - effective hospitality management extends beyond hotels to encompass vineyards, excursions, and the plethora of businesses contributing to a visitor's overall destination experience.
Positive recollections are further supported when staff, such as waiters, room attendants, landscapers, front desk personnel, and tour guides, engage with guests about their experiences and seek ways to enhance their stay and to help make today’s experience perfect.
This engagement is most impactful when it demonstrates genuine concern for guests’ feedback. Not just asking, but caring about my response. Rather than relying solely on questionnaires, authentic interactions foster the sharing of personal memories and emotions.
Sharing one’s memories and one’s emotions with other people, people who show a real interest in me and my life as a traveller and my curiosity about other people, their cultures and their appreciation for local environments.
Stories
Memories will become stories shared at home, in workplaces, or through social media platforms. When a city, region, or individual tourism business actively fosters and promotes positive storytelling among its visitors, it enhances its prospects for sustainable growth.
Stories, much like ancient rock art, have the capacity to transcend generations, cultures, and languages.
Stories or narratives that endure are generally rooted in memorable experiences and emotions, carrying significant meaning within an individual's life.
Such impactful moments may occur unexpectedly, in various settings, ranging from airport hotels and cafés to renowned sites like the Pyramids and Chomolungma.
They can arise irrespective of cost or anticipation, consistently drawing individuals back to those destinations. These stories are then retold, enriching both the storyteller and their audience. It draws one in and draws one back.
HYVVU asserts that if guests tell their friends stories about their experiences at hotels, restaurants, spas, or destinations after their stay, these positive testimonials contribute to the destination’s sustained success and the future of its people and tourism offerings.
